Biography or History:
Colby-Sawyer College was founded in 1837 by Anthony Colby. It was originally called the New London Academy (also referred to as the New London Institution or New London Seminary). In its inception, it was a school for young women under the direction of Susan Colby, the school’s first teacher and principal. In 1853, at the request of Anthony Colby and Pastor Ebenezer Dodd, the New Hampshire Baptist Convention took over the academy, transforming it into the official Baptist Academy for the state; it opened that same year with 100 male and female students. The following year, New London Academy was renamed New London Literary and Scientific Institution. In 1878, the school was once again renamed, this time as Colby Academy to honor the school’s founding family. In 1928, after 91 years as a secondary school, the Colby Academy trustees voted to transform Colby Academy into a junior college and preparatory school for women called the Colby School for Girls. In April of 1933, by an act of the New Hampshire Legislature, Colby School for Girls was renamed Colby Junior College for Women. In 1973, the name of the college changed yet again. At this time, the college was offering two, three, and four year degree options so it changed its name to Colby College of New Hampshire to reflect the diverse options available to students. It remained this until 1975 when, after a lawsuit from Colby College in Maine, it changed its name a final time to Colby-Sawyer College, honoring the school’s first principal, Susan Colby, and the college’s first president, Dr. Herbert Leslie Sawyer. At this time, it remained a women's college and would remain so until 1989 when the board of trustees announced that it would admit men beginning in the fall of 1990.
