Biography or History:
The Youth’s Companion was started in April of 1827 by Nathaniel Willis, Jr., a Congregationalist deacon, who felt America’s youth needed a journal of uplifting, moral stories which would prepare them for their adult lives. The Youth’s Companion lasted for a century. In 1927, the Companion changed from a weekly to a monthly. It endured for a bit longer as a monthly, then combined with the journal The American Boy, then ceased altogether. The Companion promoted itself, contrary to its title, “ for all the family”. It could also boast of contributors such as Robinson Jeffers, Willa Cather, Jack London, O. Henry, Louisa May Alcott, and Harriet Beecher Stowe among others.
