description: A black-and-white engraving of William in his later years. In this 1888 photograph he wears his uniform, and signature distinguished expression. One source indicates this portrait was used in the second edition of Sherman's Memoirs, 1889, as well as serving as a model for the engraving of the first Sherman postage stamp issued in 1893. An inscription on the engraving reads: "Maggie from Lizzie Sherman." A note found with this print reads: "Here is the picture I told you about once upon a time. 'Maggie' is my mother and 'Lizzie' is Elizabeth Sherman, the general's daughter. I know 'Maggie' would like you to have it. Happy New Year from Jo."
