description:
A sepia-toned photograph of a Colgate family gathering on the steps of Stonehurst, home to Robert Colgate and his family for about 25 years. Beginning at the left are Samuel Colgate and his wife Lizzie. Seated behind Lizzie is a boy, probably Romulus, youngest son of Robert. Seated on the steps is Mary Colgate Colby, a sister to Robert, James, and Samuel. Behind her with a white beard is James B. Colgate; across from him in a wicker chair is his second wife, Susan C. Colgate. Seated in the doorway, looking down, is Georgianna, and standing next to her is probably her brother, Abner, both children of Robert and his 1st wife. The man within the doorway is unidentified. Robert, the matriarch is seated in the chair in front with hat and cane in hand. The two boys seated with less than pleased expressions are probably Gilbert and Sidney, sons of Samuel and Lizzie. The young woman in the dark dress is Alice Colgate, and next to her is her brother, Samuel J., both children of Robert and his 2nd wife.
