Erroneous rumor flashed around the world that Krushchev was dead. Momentary panic. Diet.
Dreary day-phone rang at 9 o’clock and it was Liza to say the whole thing is on again. She didn’t marry Hugh and on Saturday evening he went to pieces + said he was afraid of marriage blah blah. The worst of it is from my personal point of view that Liza has never told Emory that twice the whole thing has been called off. Lud Lud. I called Lyle + got Florida’s phone number from him-He hadn’t had a chance to speak to her. James Chapin called + asked me to lunch. Peter had to drive me down there. We went to some little place out in the Valley and he had 3 martinis before lunch + 2 brandies afterward. I had a screwdriver, my metrecal wafers and about 10 cups of coffee. Well-the poor guy probably had some sort of ulterior motive (I know damn well he did because he said as much) but I guess they’re all talked away into nothing. He brought me home about 3:30-wanted to meet Peter. They met. Peter had gotten our coin books. Unfortunately James Chapin is a collector + alot of the magic + fun went out of the thing when it turned out that what we have is a mess + not worth anything-oh well. hell. He gave us an uncirculated Kennedy half dollar which I put in cellophane. Dick came over + met him. He left after about 1/2 an hour. He’d invited me + Peter to a party at Newport Beach on Saturday night but I told him Peter would be gone and I’d have to come with Dick-if I go. After he left-Dick left (we decided to work tomorrow) and I took a nap. I had a splitting headache. Peter was angry at Chapin which didn’t help and I felt awful. I’m too old to go through this shit anymore + I suppose I”ll probably end up not working for the poor fool just to avoid strain. Two aspirin helped not at all. Had a tuna fish sandwich later. We watched the Academy Awards-Sidney Poitiers, Patricia Neal, + supporting actors Margaret Rutherford + Melvyn Douglas, “Tom Jones” best picture, best direction, best music. We put our coins in books but as I said before the fun had gone out of it. We watched “Outer Limits” with Phyllis Love trembling her chin from beginning to end + then Wagon Train with Pippa Scott who looks well + Charels Drake who was very good. Pippa looking like Katherine Hepburn which is pretty damn good. Excellent performance by Will Kulova. Worked on crossword puzzle. Had call from Tom Middleton who’s working on a childrens’ book afraid I didn’t cheer him up any. Interesting news item locally-Steven Anthony who has been trying to save his home from the Hollywood Museum Site was arrested + evicted. The “ex-marine buddies” who showed up a while back to “help him defend his rights + his house” turned out to be sheriff’s department in disguise. Pretty low trick.
