Up about 10:30 without a trace of a hangover. Just so glad to have gotten all my gripes off my chest. Washed up the party glasses etc + made coffee. Heard Liza on the phone in the other room talking to Hugh + telling him I might be leaving this afternoon or else tomorrow. When she got up we didn’t speak except “good morning” etc. Then she left the house for “half an hour” (about 2 in all) I called TWA + found I could get out at 5:45 this afternoon. Called Peter + explained the situation again + a little more coherently. Told him I could wait + come tomorrow + still get enough to work on the film at home. That I’d ask Liza what she wanted to do. Otherwise I”d be home tonight. Told him I’d call back as soon as she came in + we’d talked it over. Well-when she got back I said “I can leave this afternoon at 5:45 or I can meet with the Doctor tonight + get all the rest of the details + go out to the hospital tomorrow morning + take notes + then leave tomorrow afternoon. If I do that-I’d have enough material to try to write a script for you and if it wasn’t good enough then you could forget about paying + we’d all be even.” I also apologized for some of the tangential vitriol (too strong a word) of last night’s argument but repeated that in the main I meant what I said about my qualifications and the inherent difficulties if not downright impossibilities in existing circumstances. Then Liza told me that she’d spoken to Hugh this morning and that he’s working on some sort of project + wants her to come to New York-whereas if she goes ahead + does this film it will mean that she has to stay in Louisville another two years (that may be an exaggeration) to make the whole thing pay off and she doesn’t feel that she can go ahead + make the film [crossed out writing] and then leave because she says that apart from the waste of her own time + energy she’d be running out on Lyn, Emory, + Ed. Well the upshot of it was that she decided it might be better to forget the Whole thing. I was so relieved I said I”d forget the transportation money etc. All ended up very amicably + she called Dr. Langdon at the hospital to call off tonight’s dinner. I spoke to him too-felt a little qualm but what the hell. The story that we’re telling is that I got called back to do my commercial. Liza suggested I stay + go to the races tomorrow + Weds. But I said I had to get back. Made reservation tomorrow at 3 o’clock. Called Peter + then Liza + I went out to dinner-tragic horrible story about apparently happy family. We went to the Pineroom + had a delicious dinner-steak for me + Lobster for Liza. Got into conversation with a frenchman named Ernest de Beer who used to be an animator + now sells religious goods. Talked French + had a lovely evening. Bartender speaks + reads + writes Hungarian although born in Georgia-funny evening. Home about midnight.
