Happy Egg + Happy Bunny. Woke up about 9:30-everyone off to church + Sunday School. Came down + had some coffee + went back to bed. The gang returned about 10:45-looking darling Susan + Busy had white coats + yellow dresses + etaient a croquer. Larry had a madras jacket + was quite elegant. I had juice + more coffee + then dressed to go out to the country club + meet the Baillieres for lunch. It’s an awfully pretty set up there. The place was alive with children in their Easter finery + carrying pails + baskets for the big egg hunt after lunch. The Baillieres look very well-I do like them. We all had a drink in the main lounge overlooking a very attractive rolling golf course. I brought out those joke cards “The Freeway Dept. regrets to inform you…” etc. and everyone enjoyed them. A buffet lunch-beautifully prepared. Larry’s plate consisted of about 5 sweet rolls. Some gentleman stopped by the table + when Larry didn’t jump to his feet + was brought to task he said in explanation “I thought it was a woman.” Busy seemed to have an active social life. Susan is a dear little girl but for some reason Busy just kills me-like Margie + like Lincoln. They’re the three unexpected children among that generation-originals all three. By the time dinner was over (+ Susan livened it up by announcing to Mr. Bailliere, “we’re going to have a new uncle”) the anticipation + the tension among the children was reaching fever pitch. The Egg hunt wasn’t supposed to start until 2:30 but the little (+ not so little) ones were all out straining at the ropes by 2 o’clock. A chilly but sunny afternoon. The Baillieres had left. Newcomb found a marvelous place to start Busy off-way up at the end of the rope so when the whistle blew she had a whole area to herself. In about 20 minutes every egg in the place was gone + the lines formed for the children to collect their stuffed bunnies. Met a very nice girl Marilyn something-or-other whose husband’s mother had been in the theatre department at Vassar. About 3:30 with pails full of eggs + arms full of rabbits we rolled back in to the house. The girls + Anne took naps + although I’d meant to also I somehow wound up playing backgammon with Larry + then Gin with him + Newcomb. Larry’s a delight to play with-a good sport + a good player. We had an invitation to go out but didn’t. Instead looked at newsreels of the Alaskan quake + then watched Walt Disney-part one of “Greyfriar’s Bobby”-I got very tearful over the whole thing. Beautifully done. Delicious dinner while we watched. After the children had gone to bed (Busy reappeared several times) We sat + talked + watched Harry Belafonte on Ed Sullivan + Judy Garland-then Newcomb + I played Gin Rummy again-Five Hollywoods + I didn’t win a one. Still fun. Bed about 12:30. Read Max Wylie’s story of his daughter’s slaying.
