Up about 9:30-no fruit juice-Annie breakfasts off fly biscuits. Made instant coffee-called James Brown not in but someone in office told there was a letter for me there + sent it over by special messenger. Called James Chapin + discovered my job is a [crossed out writing] Heinz Bean commercial-ah the magic of it. Not being shot until mid-April so no conflict with Louisville. Called Peter then + had long talk with him-my love-he wasn’t overjoyed at my turning around + leaving the minute I get there but at the same time was generous in approval. He’s got another ALL commercial + will be going to New York on about the 16th of April for a few days. While I talked to him the Special Messenger came with J.O.B.’s letter-rather grim. Hans had finally contacted him + his demands are outrageous. The only bright spot in the letter was “you have gotten yourself into a bout (not ‘about’ but absolutely) the worst mess I’ve ever seen.” Nice to have some distinction. My Tuesday conversation with Fred Botterman seems to have precipitated the crisis. Went down to 18th Street-gave Charles $5, took coats to cleaners to be stored, signed Julie Canestra’s copy of my book, gave a copy to Mary + Bill, bade a fond farewell to the Sleepy Hollow, ordered (1 day late) the flowers Mother wanted me to send to Colby + Russell, went to see Harriet for brief visit + then back to the apartment to call Lester at home, Harold Stern + James Brown also chez lui. I’ve decided to ask David Kallman not to dissolve Patch pockets. I control 75% of it + can thus effectively block Hans Rosenwald from selling it any other form (film, record, what have you) as well as from having it published in Britain. That way unless he wants to reconsider + make a reasonable offer the book will die a quick death. All very sad + I am expediting the funeral but see no choice. Called David Kallman + asked him to maintain the corporation. Fond farewells all around. Druscilla came in while I was calling Mother + Daddy-nice talk with them. New London the nicest part of this whole abortive trip. Left rent money with Drue + went back up to Annie’s. Read some fascinating stories by Rita. We went to an Indian restaurant for dinner. Good but slow. Got carton, twine + wrapping paper afterward to pack typewriter for Mother. Came home + read while Annie typed stuff for “To Broadway with Love.” Both Cliff Cothern + Shelia Smith are in the show.
