(Called Gertrude to make date for tomorrow)
Wakened by the phone at 9:30-Bill Wiley of all people to say Hello + Good bye + how nice it had been. How nice he had been! + how very thoughtful. Started the day off wondrous well. Made coffee + called Colby to say okay to the Thursday noon departure for Washington. Some qualms but what the hell. Buzzer rang + it was Bill spoiling for a fight but I wasn’t about to oblige although we did have a moment of pure yelling on both sides. He was drunk but there was nothing here to offer thanks God except a little bit of sweet Vermouth which wasn’t discovered for an hour or so. Coffee before. He told me I was a trivial person + I agreed on + on. Lambasted Mullen-finally in Mullen’s defense I said he’d been a good + loyal friend to Sam. To my great surprise that was the first Bill had known of Sam’s death + he went a little bit to pieces. I felt badly but after all he had it coming. We called Siggy at the hospital (St. Luke’s) trouble getting him until Bill said he was Siggy’s father. Poor Siggy-I thought it a little thoughtless. Still nice to talk to him. Bill left at one-clutching a deposit for his boat fare to Ibeza. I [crossed out writing] made call for hair appointment. Letter from Peter + card from Annie (Erin go braugh)-the letter was the one I’d missed in New London saying he’d been offered a soap opera in New York but Peter Faith had suggested [crossed out writing] he put his price out of their range which he did. Also some chance of a Disney three-parter at $1,000 a week which would mean three thousand. Good lord. Marc Perrier of Muller, Jordan + Herrick called with a job for me on Monday. told him to call Lionel Larner at G.A.C. He’d never realized I was away! Oh well. I went to the Towers + had my hair cut very well + had a manicure from Julie Canestra-gee she’s a nice girl. Saw Ernie + Rae et all. Came back + called Drue who was going to Meet Dick Jennings at the Oak Room at the Plaza at 7:15. Said I’d try to get over. Called Lester, missed him, he called me + we made date at 6:00 at Pete’s. Called Lionel Larner + found they’d offered minimum he’d asked for $250 and it’s firm at $200. Whee! Nice to have an agent like that. Met Lester + we had 3 drinks + some antipasto. Long talk about money, money, money. He apologized for having said what he did about not going over $10,000 on a settlement + that it was after all my money + my life. I told him it was good for me to have a sounding board + liked our relationship just exactly as it was + is. Lester dropped me at the Plaza. Found Drue in Kelly Green as was I. Dick going to be on “To Tell the Truth”-taping tomorrow what fun. Went to Strand Tavern left copy of book off with Tommy-his day off but there he was-next stop Theatre Bar with Tommy. Gave book to Danny + Sammy. John Abbey there + he brought me home. Drue spent the night here at the apt + a drunk night it was.Date Created
