Early up-in time to see Mother off for Boston-Daddy went to meet Bill Wiley in Concord at ten o’clock and I had the day to myself to do with as I wished-wrote Peter-first working on his letter to Parker-I feel that he should stress his obligations to his own children. When writing Peter I told him to consider the possibility of a lump sum cash settlement up to $15,000. I could lend it to him easily and when I’m in New York will discuss the matter with Lester. Then I wrote Mary-my first letter and I feel a little bad about that but that’s the way it is-wrote a fairly empty talky letter about this + that. Hilary came to lunch at 12:30 and we had a good visit. Told her about the book etc. + Peter + talked about Joan-it’s been a year + a half for Joan from beginning to end and I think she’s lucky it looks as though it’s going to be longer for Peter + me. Ethel fixed a nice lunch. Later I drove Ethel downtown to the post office where Vic Dean god bless him called me Patience-had left my wallet at home so brought her back. Then went visiting. Cashed a check saw Betty Nichols + Mary + Mrs. Fleming + Jim’s mother from Georges Mills. Saw Bill Kidder + Mary Haddad. Then over to see “Uncle George” Graves-nice visit. He’d bought two copies of my book + wanted me to sign one to Robin Reid + one to him-we had fun + Mrs. Reid (Virginia) gave me coffee. Next stop Joan Lyons + oh god-I wished I’d gone down before + stayed all day-we had a really nice visit. Stayed til almost six-stopped in at the Cochranes on my way back-they were having people to dinner at 7 so didn’t stay long-just enough to say hello-saw Malcolm who told me David Ramsey would be waiting for my call. Got home to find Daddy i a tizzy-Mother not back from Boston yet. Prof. Bill Wiley upstairs-the Squires on the way etc. etc. Rushed up + changed + got back down just as J. Duane + Mrs. Squires appeared at the door. Rather nice to see them again. Mother arrived shortly after blessedly unexhausted at least in appearance. [crossed out writing] Bell Wiley came down (”call me Bill”) and right away I knew the evening would be pleasant. he’s a delight. We had a drink + sat about until 7:15 when we repaired to the Edgewood for dinner. Met Lancing Bailey. Lovely dinner. Saw Norman just at the end and he told me he’d drive me to Claremont tomorrow-whee. Candles + wine + good talk. Back to the house. Cordials all the way around-the Squires left about 10- Mother + Daddy retired at 10:30 + I sat up + had beer with the professor until almost one o’clock. We talked about life + death + love + marriage + got along just about fine-told him about Peter. He told me if ever I got to Atlanta to call. A new friend. How nice.
