Up at 6:30 - then at 7 o’clock - great trouble with lenses + Peter raced out to get me Murine - made bed with fresh sheets tidied up a little. Coffee + V-8 juice. Washed up including Hair. Wrote note for Drue. Last minute packing. About to leave + Drusalla called. Told her apartment would be empty tonight. Left house about 8:20 - Grand Central at 8:40. Peter checked his bags. I bought ticket. Put my bag in locker and we went to have coffee - Peter’s plane leaving at 12:30. Promised to write and not to call until I get back to New York. We went to train + Peter found a pushcart + rolled my suitcase or rather portable library all the way to the 2nd car from the end. Put it in first seat + then went to the platform to hug + kiss + not say very much. Peter told me to turn my St. Christopher around as there would be too much comment. It looked like his brand or something. Finally the train started to move out. He walked along a little and I told him to stop or I’d cry. Waved goodbye + then went to my seat. A trifle crowded on the knees as the suitcase took up all extra room. Bought a ham + cheese sandwich someplace along the line, finished a mystery by Margaret Miller called the Listening Walls + slept for about 3 hours. Woke at Brattleboro. Eyes more comfortable - lack of sleep the only trouble. Daddy there to met me at Claremont. Weather mild + not much snow. Sixth day of thaw and the rivers are beginning to flood. We talked about my book, the Taylors the primaries which are on Tuesday and many other things. I asked about Mother very seriously + Daddy said that she was dragged out + rather depressed but in no way desperately ill. Home at 4:10 - Mother all excited - looking a little thin + as Daddy said draggy - but otherwise fine. Cup of tea right off. Gave Mother the ten or 12 mysteries I’d picked up. Unpacked a little - and sat in her room + talked. She put on the dress I’d sent her for dinner + it looked marvelous. Drink before dinner - talked some about Mary + Allen. It seems Allen wrote a letter to Daddy - “Dear Dr. Cleveland” - and all “They want” (he, that is ) is to be left alone- they are unhappy about he situation (Mother + Daddy) but feel they did all they could and did nothing wrong. Asked me whether or not I thought Mary was truly “psychotic” as Allen has insisted she is. Said and reiterated that it was obviously my personal opinion + in no way an qualified one that she is not. They do not like the fact that Allen has complete control of Mary’s funds and want to be sure in making their wills that he will not have control of the rest but that it will through Mary go to the children. Nice dinner after which Daddy + I went to see “the Great Escape” at the college. Exciting + a little grim. Well done. Home about 10:30 - cordial + then bed. Mother gave me an afghan to put together.
