Messages from Frank Eydent with new number + a call from Edna Davidson. Called her + she told me that three of the six copies (!) that Campbells had left were so dog-eared (the covers) that she was ashamed to offer them. I assured her I could exchange them with fresh copies. I had a message to call Elizabeth + did-she was out at Mandeville making raised doughnuts for the children + filling in for Millie. Oh dear. We could not talk when I called back. Timmy called to say Estelle Winwood wasn’t feeling well + she + Marjory weren’t going to come out but he hoped we would. He sounded a little forlorn-we agreed to be out there by two o’clock for shortish visit. Wrote a note to Bill with $60.00-ten extra for his birthday on the 12th told him I hadn’t gotten to read his book but would before I came back. Made out check for Timmy for $100-We mailed Bill’s letter on our way out. I called Estelle before we left + asked if we could drop by on our way back from the Honor farm + leave off the books she’d loaned us. [crossed out writing] She said that Marjorie was taking her out for a drive but she’d leave the door open. Got to Timmy’s a little after two. He’d made cheese sandwiches for us and avocado. A great tree had fallen outside his house. Poor dear Timmy he’s beginning to get edgy about time running out on him-only three months to go-a few days less. And when I remembered how he felt about going out there. We chatted + visited Mrs. Rosenthal came in from next door-a pleasant sort of biscuit of a woman. Played a little with Clay + talked some about his book. We left about four + came home. Stopped at Norma Place-Estelle + Marjorie gone. Door unlocked. Went in + left the books + two boxes of imported cookies-the kind she likes which were on sale at Akron. Left a note + came back to the house. I started working on my valentines-made great lists + emptied the pig bank to stick money on to cards-got about fifteen written-Peter fixed dinner-an Akron special actually-tamales + wine had both been picked up on sale. Very good. Went back to work + Peter read Bill’s book. Decided at 10: 15 I deserved a respite + we went to the Ivar. Sat backstage through the last act-Mike’s last night. Went to the Backstage after. Saw all the old familiar faces even Fred who always reminds me of a Dr. Doolittle-type villain and who every time he sees me begs me to forgive him for what he said the last time which is always the same “I can’t stand actors + actresses-they’re always on” + then having asked forgiveness he proceeds to repeat it. Had planned to pick up the car from Dick but he said he’d bring it in the morning so Peter + I stayed on til closing. Buddy + Gale seem very close + I guess poor little Charlotte is out
