Up sort of mid morning. Peter’s log alot better. Wrote in diary. Peter had 2:15 appointment at Four Star to read for British Captain-surprisingly they felt he wasn’t right for that but had him read for much bigger part. He wanted it very badly + was upset that Peter Faith wasn’t there with him. I futzed about house rest of day. I called James Brown but he wasn’t in. Called Louis Auchenloss who thought my plan was good-but didn’t think JOB had been able to contact Hans Rosenwald yet. He (Louis) had suggested JOB write him. Told me to call JOB early in morning if I wanted to reach him. I called Lester + he’s putting $500 for me in bank-mentioned Peter to him. We’re getting together for lunch as soon as I get back. Tried to get David Kitchem but no answer. Peter back at 5. Called Hospital but they wouldn’t let me talk to Mary-asked if she wanted me to come out + the answer was she “would appreciate it” but not to go to any trouble. Knew she had letter from Mother by now + Allen visited last night so felt I ought to go. Cecil Rhodes called + wanted to discuss something with me-hasn’t gotten his copies made yet but wants to talk about the production. Honest to God-he’s a nuisance + a creep and the plain truth of it is if he wasn’t a negro I wouldn’t even talk to him and that bugs the hell out of me. We called Bobby Frye to say we’d get together around 9 + then drove out to the hospital. Some mistake Peter not yet on visitors list so he went out + bought beer + read in the car. Allen told Mary last night he didn’t love her anymore. Very sweet of him to do so in the hospital-seems to me she handled it very well. Letter from mother was firm but not unkind and Mary seemed to have assimilated it too. Best thing that I can see is her desire to set up a working relationship with Dr. Horenstein. We had a very good visit + longer than I’d meant-can’t believe this is Mary I’m talking to. We came home + stopped at the Pana Coffee shop for dinner then to the house + called Bobby who came right over. We played Scrabble all evening until 3 or 4 in the morning. I won both games-whee. At 4 after Bobby left Peter + I played 21 and I lost heavily. At 5 called Mary Jean to tell her I was going to stop there on my way home if she’d have me. Was delighted (it was 7 there incidentally + John had just left for work.) Spoke to the children then called Jas. Brown + gave him Hans Rosenwald’s home number + the Catalogue Press number.
