Well-had trouble sleeping last night. So much rushing through my mind. Up at about eleven finally-wrote in diary. Paid bills-Hayes, Players Guide-rent on 18th St. (told Drue I’d be coming back soon-might stop + see Mary Jean) Wrote Bill-Peter’s been reading his book + is close to half through. I haven’t been able to get at it yet. Explained I called Betty-she was going to see Mary this morning and I told her to tell her that I’d go this afternoon. Dear Betty. She’s solid as a rock. Need to talk to her at length sometime. Told Peter about my Jas. Brown decision-I was pleased he wrote a note to Daddy + I told him it was presumptuous + all wrong. Which was unfair + unkind of me. Called Dick Kneeland-his family is celebrating his birthday which is the 8th tomorrow so he can’t go to Disneyland but I plan to tell Allen it’s the hour anyway. Of all things I got a W-2 from Brock Carson in the mail today. Can’t understand it not including the amt. paid out of bond. Told Peter I’d meet him at Backstage at 6:30 + went off to see Mary. Had tires checked + gas filled up. Got there a little after 4:30. Met roommate Louise who is missing one hand + gangrene after a shot to which she was allergic had forced amputation. Shot given prior to shock treatment. Met Florence someone-very very nice-something to do with [_____] restaurants. Long, long talk with Mary who is clear as a bell. She has now come to the decision of peace at any price. Feels for the first time that the family is behind her. I told her she always asked help too late + it wasn’t fair. I said call me up + say “let’s have lunch, I want to talk things over” and I’d always come. And I said if she wanted to get out + spend the night at my house sometime + go see a movie + have a few drinks to call me at noon and we could arrange it etc. etc. All agreed to. It’s very different this time. I also decided something else very important and that is not to go out to Mandeville at all if possible. Also to tell Betty + Elizabeth to be as unavailable as possible + to talk it over with Millie. Everyone helped make things go deceptively smoothly last time-not this time. At the risk of apparently abandoning the children-let’s let Allen see who keeps that household going. Told Mary I wouldn’t go out after tomorrow. Also said I’d leave them off before bedtime so Allen could put them to bed. Had cup of coffee with Mary + Florence, another Florence, + Charles + drove back to Backstage. Had a few drinks with Peter + then dinner. Played darts-Gave card to Dick. Had planned to go to movies-too late. I was in shaky humor. Back to house + talked-Peter called Allen-said he had to drive. Allen said “How will I explain to David?” Peter said well you work that out. I can’t bear to be driven.” Was delighted because Mary hadn’t wanted the children to be all driven by Allen. David either. Told Peter my decision about Mandeville + he agreed completely.
