What a day!!! Was up at 8 o’clock-Peter off at 9-made pie crust + pie topping + was working on them when I thought I heard the phone ring afar. (Bedroom) By the time I reached it line dead. But got Jack Donaldson later “Good morning honey. This is your ever lovin’ agent” blah blah-appt for Martian at 11 o’clock “Go out + get the job.”-they were shooting Friday + Monday which would be a squeeze but wouldn’t conflict with Peyton Place. Peter home in time to drive me up. Got a look at script-a darling part-character everything + just the sort of thing I want. A big part + a good one. Flipped. Read for Jack Chertok Mr. Kern + someone else. Read with Lynn Stalmaster who was marvelous. Read well + knew it + was so excited I was afraid to think of it I wanted it so much. Price St. found new revisions for Peyton Place had been left last night + Gladys + Shelly had gone crazy trying to find me. God bless them. The revisions consisted mostly of cuts. Oh well. Back to Burlington-finished the pies. Peter got check for $175 from All-things getting very tight. He put in call to Sheldon Andelson at 3 o’clock. Judy called to say I’d gotten Jenny in “Martian” BUT-oh heartbreak my day on Peyton was changed to Friday. Conflict-which did I want? Jenny obviously as it’s a part. Called Ceil Armanda saying of course my agents wanted me to do the other-she said they were crazy-my part would be in + out etc. etc. Also that I’d been given it “as a favor to Mrs. Roberts.” (so it wasn’t Paul Monash after all) I knew my goose was cooked + said I’d see her Friday implying right along it was what I wanted. Tried to call Judy back in her phone booth but couldn’t reach her. So called Joe Scully at 20th (casting) with whom I thought she was speaking. Told him I wanted to do Peyton Place-prior commitment blah blah-but I think it worked out well. Judy then got me + said I was going to be paid for 2 episodes on P.P. + they’d told her too that it would be a recurring part. She called Stalmaster Lister to say (true) that 20th was going to hold me to their contract + I called to say how sorry I was. Pat in the office said she was sorry too, it was nice of me to call and “your agent did everything she could”-if only Judy were my agent. I just hope I get another chance at a part like Jenny. Oh dear. We cleaned the house + got things ready. Estelle, Sam, Margery + Paule arrived with flowers, wine + Jack Daniels just at the end of Peter’s “Mr. Ed” show-nice dinner but early evening as Margery was tired just as well really as we were too + I was cranky from not eating
