Awful awful day-I got a call from Jack Donaldson in the morning to go see a “Mr. Serafian” at Desilu Gower at 2:30 re a four day job in Slattery’s People. The price was $500-”I haggled + haggled,” said Jack “but that was all they could afford.” -$125 a day! Oh well consoled myself that at least it was a part. [crossed out writing]-presumably a fairly good sized one. Peter got a Valentine from Annie + we both got one from Lyle. I went up to Price St. for my green sweater, “commentary” for Thayer David, letter scale + mail. Note from Betty Bendyk who’s marrying Nelson Algren-Whee! The day’s one ray of light-She’s going to leave the Bust of Dante with Mary Haas-got bill from Harold Cook saying thank you and a revised income statement from N.Y. Trust. Took conversations with Nelson Algren that Mather gave me + read a bit in the car as I was early at Desilu. Went in + Mr. S. took me in an office across the hall + outlined the plot to me. A tract housing situation-3 days on location-the “part” I’d envisaged didn’t even have a name. Just “Shrill Mother”-glorified extra work. After outlining plot (I don’t think I’d said more than 10 words) Serafian rose + said “thank you for coming in. I just wanted to look you over.” I said “well now that I’m here would you like to look at my book + get a little idea of my background?” To which he replied “Not thanks, I just wanted to get a look at your kisser.” If only I’d said Screw you but no-I just went stumbling out blinded with tears. Stopped at Super S + bought some Valentines-came home-screamed + wept. Then called Judy Briggs-the situation is untenable I must get a new agent and a new situation before I go crazy. Talked it over with her + as always she was a voice of sanity. Told her I was going to “shop around” but would let Jack know only when I found someone. Then called Sonya Roberts-Juarez promised to have her call later-worked on Valentines-Got about 29 done. Sonya called. She’d written a part for me in December + guess who got it-Mariette Hartley + they’re all sorry now. Oh lord. Am to call her Monday + we’ll have lunch next week-She was cheering to talk to. Peter fixed chop suey which went wrong. About 11:30 we went down to the Post Office + mailed Valentines. Took Jiggs with us-Came back + I wrote more Valentines + Peter worked on stamps til almost four o’clock-we had some beer + wanted more but luckily it was late-
