The day began rather badly with Peter’s 7:30 call to Andelson. Parker “won’t accept” his offer. So now what + how much longer + why don’t they change the offer which is the same as 2 years ago-Oh Hell- Called around about Firescreens-(Peter’s idea) + unbelievably located a man who said it could be made out here in two weeks! Called Mother to make sure they hadn’t gotten one yet-they haven’t. We had a good talk + I was glad I’d called. Made arrangements with Harold Cook (Firescreen man) to visit the factory (Sunset Fireplace or something). Got out + tried to start my car-dead as a doornail. Peter + I went together in his car-very nice people + the screen will be perfect-six panels-78″ long-42″ high-cost $57.20 plus freight which will be collect + they’ll ship. Whee! Also should be finished in one week. We picked up pictures at Camera Shop-one lovely one of the Homestead. Went to Peter’s unemployment. I sat in car + wrote in diary. Next stop Huntington Harford Theatre-got seats for “liliom” tomorrow night + “She stoops to conquer” Friday night-both pairs front row center. Bought a few more Valentines-went to bank to get some new one dollar bills-none available-Went to Bank of America where the girl told me “our bills are exceptionally crummy!”-evidently they only get them at Christmas. Went to P.O. to collect stamps + up to Price St.-mail-invitation from David Lewis to cocktails Saturday. Got mysteries for Mary my new suit from Mother-Goldsmith (copy of “Stoops”) + shoes etc. Back to Burlington-Peter’s jumper cables locked in back of Mary’s car. He had to buy a new one. But got the car started. In the meanwhile I’d told Mary I’d be late. Rush hour so didn’t take freeway. Got to Mandeville at six with ice cream. Meeting not til 6:45-I started talking to the girls (+ such a nice group) about 7:00 or so + we went on til almost 8-they asked questions and I told them stories about commercials, etc. It went very well + Susan thanked me twice which I took to mean it had been a huge success. I taught Margie to cast on + I played checkers with Abby + James-won both times but the last was a “squeaker”-went to Elizabeth’s + she fitted the suit + we sat + visited a bit. Came home on the Freeway at 11:30-Peter has call tomorrow + we went over his lines for about an hour or so-Had a beer-Bed about 1:30-scare when Peter found a man sleeping in the cellar-but he left without incident + with a dollar to find other accommodations.
