Up around ten-took Jiggs out. Peter got Sheldon Andelson who was going to talk to Fink this afternoon + wants Peter to call him tomorrow. Betty Lamb called + we had a nice talk + I told her things had straightened out + I’d probably be talking to her soon. We went to the Fireplace shop on 1st St. and the lady told me it would be possible to get the screen I had in mind but only through their wholesaler in the East! and it would take six weeks. However her estimate was about $55 so that at least seemed reasonable. I told her I’d call her tomorrow after speaking to M Other + Daddy. We went to Price St. The electric broom back plus a pkge I’d sent from New York plus another note from Bill saying the fare had totaled $300.00 which is alot less than I’d ever hoped! Also a notice from the P.O. that the stamps had arrived. Went to pick them up but we were too early. I found a card shop nearby and some marvelous but pretty expensive valentines for children-the sort of thing I’d love myself. Spent $13.50. Went to the bank for more money and then we went to Akron nothing. Looked for a pet shop to get Jiggs a present + finally got a squeaker which failed to amuse him and a rawhide bone which he chewed on for almost half an hour. Two thirty or three by then. Made tuna sandwiches + coked out for a while with detective stories. Peter went up to the Post Office a little before five but just missed them. I sorted Valentines in my office. The adult selection this year seems generally pretty dreary + vulgar. T tore up a few I’d gotten at the Thrifty Drug. Got ready to go to the theatre. Looked for cards nearby-no luck-had supper at the Plaza Coffee Shop. Our seats were in the 3rd row on the side. I had never seen [crossed out writing] “Hedda Gabler” before + had only the dimmest recollection of reading it and the show was a treat-a truly magnificent experience. Signe was beautiful. Oh Christ what an actress. And I though Thayer David was marvelous as Tesman. I was disappointed in Farley Granger but the rest of the Company was very solid. We went back after + saw Thayer who’s staying at Bob Miller’s + exchanged phone numbers-Then went down to see Signe. I don’t know what it is about her but she breaks my heart-or at least wrenches it. Such intensity of soul. We came home after + had a drink + watched a sinister old melodrama (late ’40s) called “So Evil My Love”-nice evening inspite of my getting upset (very) with Peter during the intermissions for not talking with Sheldon A. who was there-or introducing me.
