Up like a shot on the stroke of six. Tiptoed around folding up blankets + getting dressed. Annie coughed a little + she sure as hell was awake but not about to say goodbye. Oh well. Got cab at 6:30 to 87th St. Read Peter’s letter-a very dear one which Annie had gotten out for me yesterday. Finished last minute packing-the water on again + I had coffee. Wrote a letter to Annie apologising for upsetting her, but repeating what I said + then promised never to say it again-and I won’t. Left the house with two very heavy bags at about 8:00-Didn’t get a cab til almost 8:30 at which time I was getting a trifle panicky. However the nine o’clock train was actually 9:20 so I had time to get a ticket some pocket books and a lovely seat. I read the sequel to “Drink to Yesterday” on the ride up-”A Toast to Tomorrow” I loved it. Good ride. Had coffee, milk + orange juice + the filling of a ham + cheese sandwich. Arrived at 3:27 + Daddy there. Cold + sharp weather-marvelous. Him compass stuck between south + East now. Very helpful! Mother there with tea. Ethel still in the hospital but will be out soon. I’ve got my room-oh joy. We went to Parish house for Church supper-very tasty. Sat with Mr. + Mrs. Chester Melendy. Saw Bill + Peter Kidder, the Sawyers, the Colburns, the Cochrans who were helping serve, met Mrs. Bowser + Mrs. Morland + others-Mrs. Eyestone said the blessing-Daddy + I left before the business meeting. Came home + made a fire + read + talked, Mother not home til almost 10:30. I’d gotten tomorrow’s breakfast all set up. Mother told me about the possibilities of leukemia. I really can’t bear to think of it but of course I must. They’d had a letter from Jamie asking if he could come + visit + I read Mother’s answer which was a warm welcoming lovely letter. Peter had told me that Jamie had written + that [crossed out writing] Mary had said to Peter in from of Jamie “He’s afraid Mother will refuse him because of his father.” They (Mary + Allen) are both so goddamned selfish + self-involved it makes me ill. Anyway they’ll have Jame + Larry Cleveland both on this summer. I still haven’t written Newcomb + I must-also Jamie. I do feel a bit finky about the whole think esp. as Mary Jean very obviously didn’t want us after all. Oh well. Went to bed with another detective story-Malice with Murder by Nicholas Blake-Mother had the funniest letter from David Cleveland I ever read-”I hate wash.”
