Winston Churchill died tonight at 90 years of age.

Woke first at 11:30-Janie somehow had made it off to work + Mrs. Davis called to tell Scotty he didn’t need to come to the hospital today-good thing. Back asleep. Woke at 1:20 in a fit-was supposed to be at the Yale Club with Lester at one. Called. Dining rooms closed at noon. Asked them to page Lester. Not there. (Yale Club a bit snotty-”we have 6,000 members”) Tried Lester at home-not there. Alas. Coffee-pulled self together. Coat missing. But Drue’s coat there. Figured she’d taken mine by mistake. (actually Annie’s) Called Colby-told her about stamps + Scotty found some others-marvelous 3 centers he took off an old letter from Dotti. Called Paperts. Fred + Diane away-left message with Emmy. Discovered keys to Annie’s apartment were in coat. Frantic. Called Drue again. She dubious about coat. Ended up having to wait for her to come home. Coat was there but no keys. Further panic. Everyone feeling ill. Scotty + Jane off to Jimmy Whelans. I was supposed to see Cordelia but after four calls decided I couldn’t make it. Annie’s super unlisted in phone book. Took cab up. Saw Mr. Rowe-Thank God-he had another set of keys except to mailbox wherein reposed letter from Peter. Got in apt. Keys not there-vanished. Called Drue. Called Mother + Daddy. Peter called. He’d tried New London first. We had a nice talk + I told him when I’d be back etc. Plaster (more) off wall in Annie’s kitchen. Knock on door. Mrs. Eschelbach next door. Big leaks last night. Went in to see + stayed an hour. Very nice people. Hot water turned off. Back to apartment. Cold water off too. Lord. Called Annie who was sounding very sick to tell her what to expect. Poor Annie. I packed + read a wonderful Tommy Hambledon-”Drink to Yesterday”-Didn’t turn off light until after 3:30. Alarm set for 8 o’clock. Toilet which wouldn’t flush suddenly started to flush incessantly at about 4 am. Had to turn water off. Lud-Lud.

One Response to “Saturday, January 23, 1965”

  1. “Everyone feeling ill.” After 2 1/2 bottles of vodka, a fifth of scotch and a liberal sprinkling of rum….for 5 people…..I guess I would feel ill as well.
