Up about ten-coffee-etc. “Tiny Alice” came to clean her bottle of Gallo sherry out on the kitchen sideboard. Russell called to make sure I wanted the paintings. I was even more excited about them today. Asked him to send them out to Peter’s. I read my mystery “Rim of the Pit” a very good + unusual tale by Hake somebody. Also knitted-have passed the armholes on the back. Left the house about four-Colby drove me to the subway. Walked from 86th St to the house-Letter from Timmy-a very sweet one. I called Alan Shayne + he said the Director wasn’t coming in until next Wednesday-which is too bad + I’m sorry but as he said-”maybe we’ll do it another time.” Had message from Scotty + caught him just as he was leaving. Mr. Davis has a fever. Scotty + I are going to see each other tomorrow night. Peter called-told him I’d caught up on Diary + all my various + sundry news or lack of it. He was on his way to Timmy’s for dinner. I called Jane + she’s coming to Scotty’s tomorrow night + Druscilla + Dick Jennings. Called Harriet and I’m going to see “Slattery’s People” at her place (actually Eva Jolie’s) tomorrow. Called Mother + Daddy to say I’d be up on Sunday. We’ll drive to Boston Weds + I’ll get a plane on Thursday. Daddy’s compass is always pointing East now-Oh dear. Promised I’d ask Peter about the directions as Bill Kidder said he could fix it. Ethel is sick in the hospital in Windsor. Oh dear again. I called Annie who will be back here on Sunday. Seems Kelly was bombed in Boston + they’re just going to finish out the week. However still plan to open in New York. Hmm, I’m sorry we won’t all (Mother, Daddy, Annie + me) be able to have a grand dinner in Boston as planned. I called Jack Donaldson + said I’d be back at the end of next week. Seems I’d been called by both Ruth Bunch + Stallmaster-Listen. I called Dick Kneeland + we had a good talk. He’s so happy it’s wonderful. I’m sorry I won’t see him this trip. They’re doing Uncle Vanya now and he has a black beard. I called Peter at Timmy’s + he wasn’t there. He was invited tomorrow night! So called him at home + was glad I did. He’d been watching the Hungarian Revolution on TV + said he’d cried-we sold them down the river so. We talked about Charlie Conrad + this + that. Extravagant but still I think finally I’m in a frame of mind where I’ll be almost glad to get back. Read “Candy” by Terry Southern + Mason Hoffenburg wild funny book.
