Slept late-had two great envelopes of mail-about 35 cards and some nice notes-especially Dr. Ellis with interesting literature on the Institute for Rational Living and a dear lovely card from Jane Eyre Repp-who is the mother of boy + girl twins-what fun! Note from Jack Naughton’s wife Patience who I gather is also an actress! I finished letter to Bill Welborne and after lunch wrote a fairly long letter to Mary and one to Jamie. Peter fixed my light for Daddy down in the cellar-a really superior job as no cords are dangling. The town excitement was a fire in Mary Foley’s kitchen this early am. Hilary gave me all the details-very gay. Peter called Stan nobe in New York about another ALL but evidently it’s been postponed. He later called Howard Rubin after dinner and nothing is happening there-the Combat [?] fell through as did the Roberts and he was a little discouraged by Howard’s saying, “Hi-Where are you?” I suppose it would have been worse if he’d said “Who are you?” Mother + I had tea together in her room + talked about plans-I decided to make some calls tomorrow. Colby called after dinner-they’re all back from Texas and I’ll see her in New York. Said Russell wouldn’t let her wear her slippers as they looked like shrunken heads on her feet! We played a rubber (Daddy + I won) and a half (nobody won but Mother + Peter were ahead) of bridge before Jim + Hil + the children came to get us to take us down to Horizon Farm. Joan + Chester Kerr there-He’s quite charming + editor of the Yale Press-Jimmy Patterson + Zip and Hilary, Allison, tony Mills + Peter Gimber beside the Paterson children and the Clevelands-very pleasant evening although far to brief. Had just had a drink poured when we left. So we poured a fresh drink here + at midnight the phone rang throwing me into a panic-Phemy to tell Peter a telegram had come. I was a little tense with her as I heard Mother + Daddy wake up. We sat up til about 1:30.
