Incredible weather-warmest since 1889-snow all melting. Slept until almost eleven-came down + had coffee-Peter working in driveway installing compass in Daddy’s car. Had angels made with logs + binder turine-E. W. N. + S.-I had fairly long talk with Mother about our situation-told her at best we would know towards the end of February + that Peter could be free in the spring and at worst-a year from late Feb. I, of course, must focus on the worst just to keep myself from disappointment. Mother said Daddy felt he ought to talk to Peter + didn’t know how + I told her Peter felt he ought to talk to Daddy but didn’t feel he was in a position to + she said she’d told Daddy that. Also said she’d told Daddy if he did say anything he should do it in the morning. (!) Lunch was upon us before we knew. After read some of my Agatha Christie and then sent my checks (Mother + BBD+O) to the Bank of New York + a commission to Jack Donaldson. Went to see Bea Embry in the afternoon-took a towel calendar + note from Mother. Bea’s mother + sister there. Peter came in to say hello+ then back to the compass in the driveway (South giving trouble). Arthur came in with sister’s husband + brother-chat about sweepstakes. Peter + I went downtown to mail letters, buying arettes + clearasil (I have a huge ‘facial flaw’) + then to get larger shirt at College Sport Shop. (Called in afternoon + tired voice answered-”Yes we’re open for exchanges.” before I’d even said.) Back home + changed-Daddy, Jim + Peter watching football game-Hilary sat with Mother + me in livingroom-drinks + lovely steak dinner. Jimmy-”and if I laugh at any mortal think ’tis so I shall not weep”-great literary coup. Very funny evening. He left about 8:30 + Hilary + I played half a rubber with Mother + Peter + then Daddy took her home + he + I played Mother + Peter. Mother gave Peter a few lessons- Daddy in (we won again) to watch basketball game + Mother, Peter + I played cards for a bit. Ethel off til Monday-all went to bed about 11:15-
