We [crossed out writing] woke at 6:30-had breakfast in the coffee shop-paid for our rooms and took off in the limousine at 7:30- 4[degrees] at the airport-Long walk to the plane. Breakfast served. Stopped at Chicago. Hour wait. Back on the plane-lunch served. 3 meals in 6 hours. Stuffed. Read detective story. Arrived Boston 2:35. Cold but not as bad-about 24 [degrees]-Cab to Avery. Ajoining rooms (!) I took nap. Called Mather about 5 o’clock-Marilou answered + I said to Peter she sounded as though she’d been drinking. Mather had made reservations for us at Dinty Moore’s. (I’d had my heart set on the Oyster House) And insisted it was his treat. Furthermore had bought me flowers. Dear, dear Mather. They came at 7 o’clock-it’s been two years since I saw Winnie and she’s quite grown up. We had a lovely dinner-Marilou had a cocktail + wine and Mather seemed very nervous + yet oddly the relationship between Winnie + Marilou seems much happier + Marilou was very communicative + outgoing. Mather had bought M.L. + me + Winnie (her first) corsages + boutonierre for Peter + himself-very festive. After we went out to look at the eclipse. Mather had bought a telescope to watch it and we had some trouble making it work. It was horribly cold outside about 0 [degrees] + we didn’t last long altho we did see it. Came into the Avery + looked out the window at the end of the hall. Watched a little TV + then they left-we walked them out + all embraced goodbye + I felt very unhappy about them as they went off into the night-maybe I”m more hypersensitive following Mary’s confession just eight days ago but where are the lovely lives we were all going to lead so long ago-Came upstairs after a drink in the bar-am tired + going to bed.
