Up pretty early-the kitchen filled with lovely smells from Jane’s turkey-rather grey day. We did exercises Peter did most of the picking up around the house-He called Elizabeth Sapinsley + I called Elizabeth R. to say we’d pick her up at 2:30-Wrapped Margie’s presents + left the house about 1:30-Leisurely ride out Wilshire-stopped in Santa Monica to buy an azalia for Elizabeth and some African violets for Mary-gave Elizabeth (”ach you shouldn’t have”) the flowers, the alligator bag. She fitted the brown wool skirt on me. Said she thought Mary had been very quiet and that she felt sorry for her + I should call more. We drove over at 3:30-House looking lovely. We had a drink + talked coin collections with James who gave us a 1959 unc penny each! Margie’s presents a great success as were the Brandy, the violets + the flower pot holder. Dinner was perfect-just the right amount + very good. Felt great after. Brandy + stayed to talk with Mary as Allen went off to bed about 8 o’clock. David drove Elizabeth home. We left about 10:45. Came home very slowly as we weren’t dying to see Jane’s guests. Got to the house at almost midnight + the party was going full force downstairs. I was furious as Jane had promised to get everyone upstairs after dinner. We went into the other living room + discussed going to Price St. but my script was in the kitchen + everything else was hard to get at without making our presence known. Left + got some beer at Sam’s + came back + made an entrance. I told Jane in the kitchen I was furious but that was it and oddly enough it all worked out fairly well. Stuart was fine-better than I’ve seen him in years + as I’d thought the same thing last time I saw him two years ago I can only assume he really is fine and I think it’s great. [_____] gets alot of credit. And even though she was for Goldwater + voted yes on 14 (rights issue) we had a pleasant time. Gary was very drunk + Anne very nervous. She told me her father had been an alcoholic. Oh lord. Paul left first with his friend + Mary P. whisked upstairs. We learned later from Jane that Mary had improved the evening by making a large play for Paul + wound up necking in the kitchen. How to endear yourself to your hostess.
