Busy day-up fairly early. Harringtons called to say they were coming. I called Janie to wish him happy birthday and promised to send him a check with interest for every day late. Peter called around about ice cream + we ordered finally from Will Wrights too late to get individual fancy moulds. Mary [Parker] painted wave unit and ship set. Jane washed Abbey rent glasses-we unpacked as much as possible and cleared the kitchen for Millie. I took clothes and personal belongings upstairs. Peter went shopping for bread + chips + dip stuff and brought down what was needed from Price Street. Mary + I went to pick up the cake around two thirty. Simply beautiful. Made room in icebox. Dick + Peter finished the lighting effects. Very effective effects. Mary finished Jane’s tunic-funny. Called Elizabeth + promised her she’d be home by midnight if it meant calling a cab-which it never would. At about five/thirty we all got ready to go to Estelle’s. (except Mary) Left at 6 for Richard’s place where he changed. First time we’d seen it. Very nice way up in the hills. He left his car at Burlington and we drove out in the rambler. Got to Estelle’s just about 7-Had drinks in the patio. Robert Henderson whom we were all dying to see not in [crossed out writing] evidence at first. Sort of like the 1st act of a star vehicle when the build up gets bigger + bigger. When he did finally appear he was very pleasant + courtly but no Mae West. Very Anglophile + said the best thing for the American Theatre would be to have Joan Littlewood’s companies + the Berliner Ensemble imported intact. A little hard for four American actors to sit + listen to but on the other hand he listened well + admitted his ignorance on certain aspects. We all really liked him. A very nice evening + Estelle quite wonderfully bubbly. We had champagne no less after dinner. Came back to Burlington and rehearsed our presentation-not as rough as might be expected. Had some beer + worked very late.
