Up about ten or eleven-puttered around-Had had message from Drue last night but was too late to return call-so called this A.M. Used signal + Peter answering. Drue had offered him the apt which he wouldn’t need. Had had good trip + gave him Anne Hobbs [crossed out writing] address. Timmy called + told me tomorrow was his deadline-would I be willing to help him + come to dinner said sure. Called Lyle + found that Peter + I are the only outsiders being invited to the Theatre Group party Called Estelle to make Peter’s apologies + I’ll go out tomorrow. Sorted out the coins we have around the place + found a few we didn’t have. Went to Akron + bought some flat white-antique paint + some linseed oil. Then drove out to the valley to the carpet place Peter had mentioned. What a joy and what fun I met a dear man named Fred Davies who is a relative of Paul Levett + who used to work in China for British customs-had been Shang-haied at the age of 14-was in the Russo-Japanese war etc. etc. A delightful man. Spent almost two hours talking to him + ended up buying a lovely green rug and two small persian rugs-all for $59.00 Can’t wait to go back. Went down to Burlington + put the new tablecloth in in the kitchen + showed Jane the rugs. Had coffee with her- + then went to Timmy’s dropping Jane at Franklin + Grace en route. Timmy in a stew over that damned brochure. Started to work with him and we had a near fight-voices raised etc. But finally began to get going. Hit on a nice cover caption “Touched by the wonder of Today”-and then inside “Are you remembering Tomorrow?” liberal steal from Joyce “touched [crossed out writing] with the wonder of mortal beauty” We didn’t eat until about 9:30 _ then went right on til about one fifteen!! I”d been hoping to meet Marlene but was afraid she might wait for me. Stopped however at Ranch Market + picked up some beer. Went to Burlington to find everything open but no one there. [Crossed out writing] I started to work on the dining room table with steel wool + linseed oil when Dick + Jane came in. Gave them beer + they helped. Dick left about 3:30 or so + Jane + I sat over beer + talked til dawn. Jane told me she’d been afraid to sleep at Burlington last night. So poor Mary was there all alone. We waited til dawn was brightening the kitchen before we went to bed.
