Got up at 8:00-the 7 o’clock call just served to make me put the coffee on-Got to unemployment on time however + cashed my check. Next week I have an interview-oh dear. Was back at the house by 9:30 Had a notice for the Academy Directory + called Jack Donaldson-didn’t get him but got his service who told me a call had come in for me from Milt Hammerman of Stallmaster-Lester-called Milt + was told to see Mathew Rapf + Lamont Johnson at Desilu Gower for a running part on “Slattery’s People” a secretary-dress tailored. In spite of the heat I put on one of my faithful knits-went in fine spirits-a short + depressing interview. Hard to put my finger on why but in spite of them all being very nice I know they weren’t interested. Asked if I had film and I suggested the Dr. Kildare with Stan Adams as the closest to what they seemed to want. Came home + called Milt Hammerman to thank him I’d thought it was the old Effrat Talent shows that were our bond but it turned out he’d seen the Koldare. I mentioned Told me my one drawback was age-that I might be too young. Talked with Jack Donaldson later + he said “Milt Hammerman said you were much too young for the part.” He said it rather indignantly as though I’d gone up their on my own. When I mentioned the Academy Directory he told me I should take care of it myself-he didn’t handle that sort of thing. As every agent I’ve had out here has I felt I could be excused for asking. HUng up thoroughly out of sorts. Dozed through the afternoon + read more of Tallulah. Finally went shopping at the super S on Virgil + then the one on 3rd + Vermont. Bought all sorts of odds + ends-including an Italian Vase for 79 [cents] that reminded me of the one I didn’t get at the auction last night-couldn’t find a circular table cloth but got two straight ones. Got 6 glasses + a pitcher all for 97 [cents]. Bought pads + notebooks etc. etc. Nothing desperately needed. Drove down to Burlington + nagged at Peter. I didn’t like this, didn’t like that-oh the filth etc. I was thoroughly enchanting. Finally straightened out a little-we went out to Zips to eat-nice place. Bought beer + groceries + came home-called Bobby Frye at the Backstage. Asked him down but he couldn’t come. Jane came in-invited her for beer. Put my table cloth on my desk. Looks nice. Asked Mary Parker down for beer too. Late long + pleasant evening-Funny Scotty stories. Showed slides at the very end.
