Up at 7:30-a little harder to wake this time. Got dressed in about 10 minutes + Daddy + I went up to the Panorama Roof for breakfast-gray day fog + rain-Dr. Ted Willis now “Uncle Ted” joined us. I promised to stop in San Maten some time-and I will-saw Dr. + Mrs. Johnson of Baltimore + “Col” Diveley to wish goodbye. Told Daddy the one from “Hatful of Rain”-”When you know who ‘they’ are you don’t need a psychiatrist.” Also showed him the note “Support Mental Health or I’ll Kill You.” He thought that was worth sending up to Dr. Baker who was presiding over a meeting on the convention floor. We went down, the three of us + watched Dr. Patterson deliver the note then goodbye to Uncle Ted in the elevator + on to packing. Confirmed the plane; had chat with Daddy-we went downstairs about 11:15 to wait for the bus. Stopped by Bakers to say goodbye not there-saw Mrs. B. in hall. Saw Neil Garber and a few others-Met Sir Reginald Somebody very nice. Hated to leave without seeing so. Many others-Hated to leave period. We took limousine-Dr. Tome Aitken there-He’d taken Daddy’s place in the E.T.O.-Was a little hung over from last night he said. No bar at airport. Hugged Daddy goodbye + traipsed after Dr. Aitken to the plane-preliminary + very sketchy customs check. Had been going to read on the plane but the book was a drear anyway-I suddenly realized Dr. T.A. wanted to talk as he didn’t much care for flying. Got to Seattle + he had a couple of drinks + we had lunch-He said such marvelous things about Daddy-that he (Tom) believed one’s immortality was what one left behind + that Daddy had a fine immortality in the world of medicine. Tom felt that he owed alot to Daddy because Daddy had told him he had to write + get published so that other people could know what he knew-he said Daddy had “found a place for him in this world”-I was deeply moved-later stories of Paris + Daddy as a “man of iron.” Tom’s plane left at 3 + I had another half hour before I left. Man sitting next to me on plane asked if I liked L.A. + I said No-oh dear. Arrived at 7:15. Peter there to meet me. Looking fine. First minutes all night + then he told me Jane had come had fight with Marlene so was by herself + wants the $37.50 apt. Jiggs was flown out-No mail. No messages-+ then he told me he’d “blown a job”-had turned down $750 to do a Purina special. Poor Peter thought I’d be proud (he said) of him for holding out for his thousand week. Don’t know why but the debts + the idea of turning down 750 etc just got to me + I was enormously depressed. Peter hasn’t worked here for ages. Next piece of news in car was Timmy has gone back to “the Silence” Oh lord-Patterns, Patterns-we all move within them all joy down the drain. Depressed beyond talking. Came home-Place a mess unpacked, went to steak house for dinner. had one drink + liver-came home + went to bed.
